Location
This photo was taken in La Hoëgne, Belgium, considered one of the (if not THE) most pittoresk rivers of the country. There were beautiful shots after every corner, but this one stood out because of the composition.Time
This photo was taken on February 5, 2022 at 11:12 am. We were hiking along the river for about an hour and a half before reaching this spot.Lighting
It was clouded at the time I took this shot, so it has a mysterious vibe to it. The even lightning makes the photo more attractive (instead of certain areas being lit up when the sun came out).Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D5600, with a TAMRON 18-400 lens at 78mm, f/13 - 1/6 seconds. I did not use a tripod, but the camera leaned on a rock. My goal was to catch a sharp image, but still show the movement of the water with a slower shutter speed. It took me several tries to get it right.Inspiration
I went hiking with a friend to catch this beautiful river with its many waterfalls. My friend was focusing on long exposure shots, while I wanted to catch the beautiful, somewhat dramatic feel of the place. After seeing 1000s of photos on instagram, I wanted to do something original, but still capture the essence of the scene.Editing
I used Lightroom to lower the highlights and up the shadows a bit, dehaze slightly and I used a S-curve to add contrast. I used the HSL panel to tweak the colors, mostly lower the saturation of greens and yellow to give that dramatic darker look. All this to match the photo with how I saw it in real life.In my camera bag
I only have one camera, my Nikon D5600. I usually take my 18-400 TAMRON lens, so I am prepared for anything and I don't like to switch lenses at location (I'm kinda clumsy). Lately I tend to take my Nikon 50mm 1.8 along as well. Further, I have extra batteries, lens cleaning supplies, plastic bags (good for anything), a ain cover for my bag. And I always take a bottle of water and some proteine bars with me, since I tend to lose track of time when I'm out shooting. Business cards are also part of my equipment, since it happens quite a lot that people see me out there shooting and ask about my instagram or website. And some documentation of where I want to go, the walking routes I researched.Feedback
Go early, when there are not a lot of other hikers around. Especially when the paths along the river are small. Take enough snacks and drinks with you, even though it is not the longest hike, the amount of time you spend shooting can mean it takes you 4 hours instead of 2. And lastly, don't get discouraged, just try different compositions and settings. I have only been photographing for 2 years, it's still a learning process. The more photos you take, the better you become at it.
