Jaisalmer Fort, Rajasthan, India
Made of yellow sandstone, this fort was built by King Rawal Jaisal in 1156 and is believed to be one of the very few "living forts" in the world, as nearly one fourth of the old city's population still resides within the fort. For the better part of its 800-year history, the fort was the city of Jaisalmer. While this unique model is good for the people who live there and earn their livelihood via tourism, this UNESCO heritage site certainly deserves better in terms of retaining its old glory, heritage and the eco-system that facilitates it, unfortunately that is not possible in current situation and it was sad to see the fort falling into disrepair. Today, life goes on as usual in the narrow lanes and crowded courtyards, much like it did in the 12th century.
