Nevada is home to over half of the United State's Wild Horses. Thankfully due to the relentlessness of a woman named Velma Johnston, the wild horses are now protected through Federal Legislation to prevent the extinction of the wild horse herds. One of the most famous herds is the Virginia Range herd near Reno, where this horse photo was captured. It is thrilling to watch these beautiful horses roam and run free.
I should add.... despite legislation...the wild horses have not been completely protected. Sadly, there have been massive round ups (often using helicopters, which is inhumane, and results in many deaths of the horses) in Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and other states. Today there are more "wild horses" in captivity than the number of wild horses living peacefully on the rangeland. Fortunately, there are advocacy groups that fight for the wild horses and are making some progress. If you are interested, these groups are always interested in members or donations for the cause.

Nice image! I love the horse's colouring. I have heard of Velma Johnston and the work she did. It is most unfortunate though that the wild horses in the US are not well protected despite the legislation and in the last couple of years, massive round ups have been held in Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and other states. I shoot the wildies in several states but in Nevada, I shoot around the Ely area. I work with an advocacy group to help the wildies. The work is gaining momentum so let's hope we can help to protect the remaining wildies out on the ranges.

Thank you for your kind comment. And, I so agree. There is a lot going on...that the public is not aware of. Legislation is not completely protecting the Herds as is the intention of the legislation I am new to Nevada and to the fight, and am so thankful for the advocacy groups that are fighting for the wild herds. Hopefully when people hear what is going on...they will join in on the fight for the wild horses. Thank you for your part! : )

Beautiful shot Pamela, very well done. We used to have them in our neighborhood, off Mount Rose Highway, but with all the building out this way, haven't seen any in years out this way. Sad... Mike

Thank you so much! And that is so, so sad!! I hate to see the wild horses being "pushed" out...I think they are one of the things that makes this area and Nevada itself so very special!! I am thrilled everytime I spot them! : )

Such a beautiful horse. Your story about them was so interesting. I have always been fascinated by wild horses, so thrilling to watch them run as a herd ! So good to hear there are so many people working to protect them !!

Thank you so much. Hopefully awareness will make people hear what is going on. From what I am learning, it is an ugly fight.....and hopefully more people will join in to fight for the horses. One of the issues, Cattle Ranchers (big $$), compete with the horses for the "open ranges" and sadly, money talks. : ( I agree with you...watching the wild horses run free as a herd is thrilling and I hope they will continue to do so forever!!
