Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Canal Street, New Orleans. The red street cars on neutral ground - as the space between the two lanes is called there - belong to the landmarks there.

Time

The picture was taken on March 8th 2022 at 5.37pm, right before sunset. I was riding home on my bike after taking a few pictures on the Mississippi. This one wasn't planned but turned out to be one of my best shots on that day. The good thing about riding a bicycle is that you can stop almost anywhere if you see something that catches your eye.

Lighting

The lights were already getting a bit dim, almost twilight, which made the lights of the streetcars shine brightly and brought out the tracks real dark, the look I wanted.

Equipment

The camera was an Olympus OM-1 MarkIII, the lense was the 14-150 mm at 135mm, f/7.1, 1/250 sec., ISO 800. No other equipment used, Handheld, as this camera has a superb image stabilisation.

Inspiration

I was staying in New Orleans for a couple of days, visiting family there. I had been there previously and this time I wanted to get some typical images and street shots I had missed out on before. I guess I was lucky to be there at the right place and time.

Editing

About post processing: I added a slight HDR effect with Aurora by Skylum to beat the dim lighting and make the red of the street cars a little brighter.

In my camera bag

I mainly use Olympus cameras. The OM-1 MarkIII is my newest but I also like the feel of the Pen F very much. As for lenses, my work horse is the 12-40mm 2,8. As primes lenses prefer small gear. I use the Panasonic Lumix 20mm 1,7 and the Olympus 45mm 1,8. Great is also a Lume cube instead of a flash - it's much smaller, easier to control and more flexible in lighting.

Feedback

Well, this picture wasn't really planned. My humble advice would be to always stay alert. Sometimes the best things just pop up in front of you and that's the moment it clicks. Of course this doesn't mean you should not plan your photo sessions. Sure I was lucky but I deliberately took Canal Street as my route because I knew what scenery I would encounter there. Be patient. I waited until the streetcars were in the position I wanted them to be, luckily they didn't move too fast, so I had plenty of time to get my picture. Dusk and dawn usually provide the most interesting light, that's true for most kind of outdoor shooting and especially landscape photography. However, if you cannot be there at the ideal time try to shoot details and segments, focus more on people and subjects than on a panoramic picture.
