Behind The Lens

Location

At home. Oscar's favorite spot - by Mom and Papa.

Time

This picture was taken the day Oscar came to live with us on Feb. 22, 2022. I have chronic health issues and it was a cold winter day. So, we decided to binge a couple of movies about midday and see how he took to that. He cuddled up, had a blanket, and was in Schnauzer heaven. They love being with their people.

Lighting

It was about midday with natural light filtering in from a double window covered with blinds. Table lamps in the room. No flash.

Equipment

My Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. No flash.

Inspiration

Oscar was a wonderful happenstance in our lives. For years we were a two-dog family. My husband and I don't have children together, so our pets are our kids. We were devastated in 2019 when we lost our first Miniature Schnauzer, Watson, to cancer. Then, in 2021 we lost our Schnauzer mix, BabyGirl to old age. She was our quirky rescue dog. We were petless and grieving. Late one night by freakish chance I found a website for people looking for pets and Oscar's little face popped up. He wasn't quite 4 years old, but was being rehomed and was in our city. His former family was gone most of the day and they had some acute health issues arise. He was alone most of the time. I couldn't wait for morning so I could text the people rehoming Oscar. The text was sent, an exchange on logistics, and in less than 24 hours Oscar was settling into his new home with us. He has been delighting us ever since.

Editing

Just some light Adobe Photoshop Elements for lighting, contrast, white balance, etc. Nothing major.

In my camera bag

My phone, a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, my Canon Rebel T3i, extra batteries for my camera

Feedback

I like to capture my pets when they don't know what I'm doing. I swear, my dogs seem to sense when Mom is trying to take a picture and they turn their nose up to the lens. So, candid shots when they least expect it work great for me. If you're trying for a "pose" having a treat on hand works a time or two. This shot was totally candid. I've gotten some great captures that way by keeping my phone close at hand.
