Looking back along the Redwood Creek Trail in the John Muir National Monument. Located north of San Francisco, the Monument was once the property of William and Elizabeth Kent who donated the property to the public in 1908. Unlike most of the surrounding old growth forest, this canyon was never logged, especially while The City recovered from the 1906 earthquake.
The canyon was proclaimed a national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt using the new Antiquities Act.
The tallest tree in Muir Woods is approximately 258 feet tall. Further north along California's coast, the tallest coastal redwood reaches 379 feet in height. That's 74 feet taller than the statue of Liberty. Thankfully, the location is not published.
Upon hearing that the new park would be named for him, Muir declare it, "the best tree-lover's monument that could be possibly found in all the forests of the world."
