One of my favorite things about living in Montana is the amount of wildlife you come across before even entering into Yellowstone. Last week, we decided to head out to the park for sunrise. We ended up running behind, so the morning light began illuminating the landscape while we were still on the road we arrived. As we drove alongside the Yellowstone River, we saw a pair of bald eagles begin their morning feeding. In general, when it comes to photographing wildlife, it doesn’t take much for me to scrap a plan and pivot my focus to something else… especially when that “something else” is a perched eagle, lit up by a classic Montana sunrise. After turning out and making my way to the embankment, I spent the first part of the morning watching these legendary birds of prey search for fresh trout until flying off in the distance. These types of encounters aren’t uncommon out here, but that doesn’t make them any less significant.
