Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken behind my parents' house while I stayed with them in Colorado after the new year, there was an owl sitting in their tree and I wanted to catch a photo of it.

Time

It was around 7:30 in the morning on January 11th of this year. My Dad and I were afraid to let their dog out when there was audibly and owl nearby, once we saw how close the owl was I decided to go and take a picture as close as I could. I didn't want to miss the opportunity before the owl flew away, but the lighting was coincidentally perfect because the sun rises directly behind the backyard.

Lighting

This was natural lighting, but the time of day and the angle the sun rises from behind the house worked perfectly for the picture.

Equipment

I used a Canon rebel T3 with a 55-250mm lens, autofocus enabled. No lights, no tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

The opportunity presented itself, when do you have an owl so close by and willing to let you take photos of it from the base of the tree it's perched in? I don't like to plan my animal photos, I like to capture more candid moments with them.

Editing

I often make minor adjustments to lighting and contrast, and sometimes I add a little bit of clarity or sharpening. To be honest, I don't remember if I even felt that was necessary with this photo, but unfortunately I only have my back up version of the file, so I wouldn't be able to tell you with certainty.

In my camera bag

My Canon Rebel T3, an 18-55mm lens, a 50-250mm lens, my Detu Sphere 360 VR camera, a spider tripod, and a lens cleaning cloth.

Feedback

Owls and many other animals live all across North America. The best way to see them is to get away from the cities and towns and venture into the forests, but the best animal photos will come when you least expect them, so keep your camera handy and you never know what will happen!
