Behind The Lens

Location

Living on Sanibel Island on the gulf coast of Florida you are guaranteed to witness many of natures glorious sunsets. This is an aerial capture at Bowmans beach looking directly west during golden hour.

Time

Its always good to be prepared for a good sunrise or sunset. If you concentrate on those two hours in a day your portfolio will certainly be a colorful one to show family and friends come holiday season.

Lighting

Nature has a way of keeping us wanting more and its simply no more than its daily light show. We wait and come sunset it delivers. No cables, no filters, no defusers, or soft boxes, just ...

Equipment

An aerial capture taken with a DJI Mavic Air 2s.

Inspiration

I'm primarily a landscape photographer and spend a lot of time at the beach. Sunsets, although mostly a daily occurrence are always different so its just a matter of when and where you are situated as to how you view that particular days spectacle. Just being there serves as the opportunity to succeed with an amazing result.

Editing

The want to post process can sometimes lead to inferior results so when it comes to sunsets I usually just crop and straighten for optimum authenticity. That being said I will sometimes sharpen and play with exposure to get proper detail.

In my camera bag

My camera bag is pretty consistent, and always filled with Nikon gear. I have two bodies that I take everywhere - a D800 and a D850. The D800, a work horse, is forever attached to my 28-300, 3.5 - another work horse. This combo has been together for at least 7 years and never disappoints. The D850 will go between the 70-200, 2.8, the 24-70 2.8, the 105 2.8 and for those late night rendezvous I'll throw on the nifty fifty 1.4 so I never miss the shot.

Feedback

Landscape photography is all about being there. If you are not there you will not get the shot. Patience patience patience and some good comprehensive research will give you the best chance to achieve your desired capture.
