When we think of poinsettia flowers at Christmas, we automatically think of the large, velvety red blooms, but the red petal parts are actually modified leaves, called bracts, with the actual small flowers in the very center. If it didn't have the showy red parts to attract its pollinators, we'd hardly notice it at all, and surely miss a century old Christmas tradition!
