Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this in Sydney Australia not far from my house during one of my daily walks during the Sydney lockdown of 2021.

Time

I think it was either midday or early afternoon.

Lighting

I was looking for sunny days so I could use the fastest shutter possible.

Equipment

Shot this on my trusty Canon 6D with my Sigma 105 Macro lens.

Inspiration

I wanted to take my macro lens out with me in an attempt to slow down and focus on the finer details of the nature around me. To get my brain to stop it's ruminating about the state of the world, the Covid, and concentrate on something else for a few minutes. Being able to create beauty with my gear made it a bit easier to get through such a trying time and long lockdown.

Editing

In terms of post work, I generally just increase the contrast and decrease the shadows and highlights a little. So that's what I did here.

In my camera bag

I always have my 2 Canon 6D's with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8. Sigma 50 f1.4 and now my Sigma 105 Macro.

Feedback

Try and go shooting on days where the wind is minimal. I quickly discovered that the wind makes shooting a successful macro shot much more difficult. Direct sunlight also helps when you need to make your shutter speed faster to get a sharp well exposed shot.
