Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at the edge of a field behind my house. They are doing construction there, so I had to put on my boots and slosh through the mud!Time
I took this photo around 10 in the morning. It was a Saturday and I was driving back from errands and the beautiful fall colors caught my eye.Lighting
The lighting was perfect for trying to capture this photo. It was a cloudy, overcast day with spots of showers. If this had been a sunny day, the photo would have been ruined because I had to use a long exposure to get the effect.Equipment
This was shot on my Canon D90 with a Sigma 17-75mm lens. I also used my tripod.Inspiration
I was inspired to take this when I drove by and saw the brilliant fall colors. However, the landscape itself would not have made for a nice photo because it was on the edge of a muddy field with houses behind it. So because I wanted to still capture the color, I decided to go with an abstract, painting look.Editing
Most of the work for this photo was done in camera!! The only post-processing I did was a slight cropping and just a touch of color boosting. In my camera bag
I normally have my Sigma 17-75 mm lens, my extension tubes, polarizer, and ND filters.Feedback
To capture an image similar to this, mount your camera on your tripod. You will want to expose for a shutter speed or around .8 to 1 second. As you click the shutter, slowly pan down, making sure not to get any side to side motion or wriggle. It takes practice, but well worth the effort to get a photo with a painting look that you do almost completely in camera!
