Beyond this point on Mare Island lies a salt marsh, the San Pablo Bay, and then the mountain range on the distant shoreline. While some signs restricting access to various places may be relics from the days when Mare Island was an active naval base, that's not the case with the sign in this picture! Signs in the viscinity warn visitors to stay on the trail because of ticks and damage that might be caused to the endangered Harvest Mouse's habitat. Perhaps the most complelling reason, however, is that old live ordinances are still being unearthed and removed from the area.
