Oxararfoss in Thingvellir National Park flows from the river Oxara and plunges 44 feet into the Almannagja gorge. The gorge is part of the boundary seam-rift (Mid Atlantic Ridge) between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Iceland is the only place where the Mid Atlantic Ridge is visible above sea level. The plates are pushing apart at a rate of approximately 1 inch per year. In addition to geological interest, Thingvellir holds an important place in Icelandic history. The world’s oldest parliament was established here in 930 AD-CE. Events at Thingvellir in the summer of 1000 CE allowed for Christianity to take root in Iceland, with the first church built on site after Christianity’s adoption. The current church building in the park dates to 1859, replacing prior church structures. Thingvellir National Park was designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Finally, fans of a certain TV series centered around games and chairs may recognize the landscape -- some of you GOT it.
