Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my favorite park, across the road from my apartment.

Time

I took this photo around 4, when the sun was lower but not setting.

Lighting

I wanted this photo to be kind of blown out with lots of light clouding the subject. I made sure the sun was directly behind her.

Equipment

This particular photo was shot with a Nikon d700, with a 35mm 1.8 lens. No other equipment used.

Inspiration

I have been playing with backlighting my subjects, and my sister wanted to hang out in the park on this day. I brought my camera and we had a photoshoot.

Editing

This photo has not been edited at all! Usually I do edit my photos a bit using Lightroom or photoshop, but I thought this photo was perfect as shot.

In my camera bag

I typically carry an external flash, extra batteries, a 50 mm lens, lens filters, custom bokeh filters I’ve made of I want to get weird, and a Pentax k1000 film camera in case I want to play with film.

Feedback

Photos like this are always going to give you an interesting and angelic shot. The main rule to always capturing these backlight shots is having a large aperture. Adjust your shutter accordingly and you’re good to go. Since you’re dead on the sun, drop your iso to 200-100, so you get a nice, soft image. Play with letting the sun peak out from a corner of the subjects for major flares ;)
