Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture from my balcony. There is a nice view to the west, where the Thunderstorm moved slowly from south to the north.

Time

The thunderstorm began on June 21, 2021 at around 9:30 p.m., after a long and very hot summer day. I've always wanted to shoot a lightning, but I've never had the luck I needed. I caught several lightnings that evening, but I like this picture best.

Lighting

I‘m proud of this picture.

Equipment

I used my Canon Eos 7D Mark II with my Canon EF-S 10-22 mm f 3.5-4.5 USM on an old Bilboa Tripod with a Remote in „B“ (Bulb) mode.

Inspiration

Welk, I was always been jealous when I've seen pictures of lightnings on the internet or on TV. I wanted to do that too. Had to read and test a lot to finally make it. For many long-time photographers, this picture may not be anything special, but for me personally it is a 5-Star-picture.

Editing

Because of my „old“ Eos 7D Mark II, I needed to do some post-processing in Lightroom. I bumped the Aperture a bit up (+2), removed the Dust a bit. Finaly I needed to crop It, because I was at 17mm as the Lightning hit the ground.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 24-70 f2.8 L USM on my EOS 7D Mark II when I‘m on the Road. When I go to a lake on a windy day, i also take my Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM with me. My small Canon 50mm f1.8 STM is always with me, I love to take Portraits with it.

Feedback

Well, you need a good sight to the Thunderstorm (safety FIRST!), a stable Tripod (near Thunderstorms is always much Wind), a remote and a wideangel lens. I used the Bulb-Mode, it helped me a lot. Sorry, my English isnt the best, Greetings from Germany.
