Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a studio in my home city of Leicester. The studio is one I hire regularly and I have a great relationship with.

Time

Being in the studio meant I didn't have any time of day restrictions or goals for natural light to aim for. But this image was taken in the afternoon.

Lighting

I wanted to create a light set up which would appear striking and almost like strong light coming through a window. A subtle fall off with the face being the main focus of the image. For the main light I used a Fresnel attachment and focused in the light. For the background it was a gridded strip box, again to help focus the light without giving to much of a spread. Hitting the background with just enough light to help create the separation between subject and background.

Equipment

For this image I used my trust Nikon d750 along with a nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens. 2x studio lights with 1x Fresnel and 1x gridded strip box

Inspiration

The lady in the image was what inspired me to take the image. From talking to her I knew that creating a strong but friendly image was the way to go. She is full of positivity and life and I wanted to try to capture this in an image. The photographic style came from looking into various photographers during a university course. The creative use of light has stuck with me and is something I keep working to perfect.

Editing

With most of my work I try to do as little amount of editing as possible. Apart from turning the image from colour (captured in RAW) to black and white there was very little else done to the image. A very minor adjustment to the blacks and shadows. Everything taking all of 20seconds to do. Editing certainly has it's place, and every image needs it to some degree but I like to get the final image as close as possible. Between you and me, I just don't have the patience for editing!

In my camera bag

I always have my camera with me in my bag. My trusty Nikon d750. It might be considered as an entry level professional camera but I barely use any of its features. I also have my old Nikon 80-200 f/2.8D lens in my bag. I love that lens. It might be old tech now but I still prefer it to all the new lenses out there which I think make everything look to clinical. Call me old fashioned. I also usually have my Bronica 645 camera in my bag too, paired with a 75mm lens. Maybe my love of film is why I like to get things as close to perfect as I can.

Feedback

All I can really say is have a play around with lighting and different lighting attachments if your working in a studio environment. Exploring the equipment, finding what it can do but more importantly it's limitations is not only knowledge but key to achieving what you can picture in your head. Knowing the limitations of your equipment means you can find a work around for the problem.
