Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in our backyard. I am a self-taught nature photographer and I also raise monarch butterflies. Both hobbies tend to collide and I am able to take unique photos of my monarchs before they are ready to fly.Time
This photo was taken in the late morning hours. I used my flash because the butterfly was quite shadowed by the flowers above.Lighting
I wanted this photo to be bright and cheerful with vibrant colors. Any day that I get to release a butterfly is a bright and cheerful day!Equipment
Nikon D5300 with 18-55 mm lens and flash. I also had it on macro settings.Inspiration
The butterfly itself inspired me to take this photo. I like to document and photograph them when I can, and my friends and family love to see them. I've even had some folks come over and release the butterflies because it is a wonderful experience.Editing
I increased the vibrance, contrast, clarity, and texture of the photo, I also dimmed the blue highlights so that the background was less bright light and more blue sky.In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D5300, 18-55 mm lens and 70-300 mm lens. I also carry cleaning cloths and occasionally a small tripod.Feedback
I would tell them to find someone who raises butterflies and knows how to carefully handle them. Butterflies typically don't hang down like this unless they are drying. Early morning light would have been more ideal. I had to deal with the harshness of the late morning-early afternoon light. This was due to the fact that my butterfly was a bit late hatching that morning.
