Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in downtown Los Angeles' Arts District.

Time

I shot this photo late in the afternoon on August 5, 2014. I was on one of my "walkabouts" through the Arts District to see what I could find. The art on the walls is constantly changing.

Lighting

Since it was late afternoon there was no harsh light; the wall art was lit perfectly for my taste.

Equipment

I love walking around the Arts District with as little equipment as possible, especially since I sometimes have to squeeze through a fence to get close to the subject. In this case I had my Sony NEX-5R with a 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

This mural is the work of LA based artist, Christina Angelina. Angelina had a couple of murals in the Arts District and what I like most is the soulfulness of the eyes in her work.

Editing

I do all my post-processing in Adobe Lightroom. I try to limit my workflow to minor adjustments of light, saturation, vibrance, and sharpness.

In my camera bag

Whenever I’m on one of my frequent "walkabouts" through the Arts District, I carry one camera with one lens. Typically my camera of choice is either the Sony NEX-5R or the Sony a6000. These mirror-less cameras are light, not cumbersome, perfect when I walking around for a couple of hours. A wide-angle lens is also a must when photographing urban art - in my case the 18-55mm lens works nicely.

Feedback

If you like urban art, keep your eyes open as travel throughout your city. Try to take your picture sooner rather than later - urban art is constantly changing. Don’t be surprised that a city wall can get painted over from one day to the next.
