Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the banks of the Yarra River in Melbourne, Australia. I took up photography in early 2021 to provide me a positive outlook while going through some serious medical issues and this was the first time I had had a chance to get a night shot of our amazing city! :)

Time

I arrived in the city at about 4pm as I wanted to get an idea of where might be the best place to shoot from. While waiting for the sun to go down I was photographing rowers who were training up and down the river and trying some new techniques in slow shutter speed panning. It wasn't overly successful. It was at about 7pm that the light and the city really made for a good scene.

Lighting

I really wanted to try and focus on the reflections on the waters surface and how various shutter speeds would effect the waters surface and its effect on the light. I played around with a few settings and decided I liked the images that were showing up on my cameras screen.

Equipment

Canon 90D Zeiss 21mm - I bought this lens with the aim of purchasing a 2nd hand Canon 5D mkiv, but I unfortunately was scammed out of $2500 and obviously don't have a full frame camera for this lens, but I thought I would try and put it too use. I also used a basic Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I have seen some amazing shots of Melbourne in recent months taken from different angles, and I have previously walked down this stretch of the river many times when I used to coach tennis at Melbourne Park (Where the Australian Open is played), so in my head I had this shot in my mind for a long time and have previously taken the shot with the phone camera.

Editing

I wanted to try accentuate the reflections so I increased the contrast, and vibrancy, but my post-processing skills are very limited to the basic section of Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Canon 90D Zeiss 21mm Canon EF-S 10-18 Tamron 100-400mm

Feedback

Honestly I'm a big believer in trial and error, while remembering the errors and the successes so you can approach the next shot with and idea of how you'd like to set the image up, both with composition and camera settings and environmental conditions. Now with digital cameras, trial and error is half the fun, and a lot cheaper than the old days using film.
