Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a parking garage in downtown Lexington, Kentucky.

Time

A little after midnight, give or take. My model and I spent the night walking around the city and shooting at different locations. I think we wrapped up around 2am.

Lighting

I only use natural lighting, or at least whats natural to the scene. Im not big on flashes or softboxes for photography, but I will occasionally use a bounce. So this shot in particular is just fluorescent parking lights.

Equipment

I use a Canon 6D and a Canon 50mm f/1.8. I really enjoy just having the bare minimum and using my surroundings to make the image.

Inspiration

We were walking around this garage after we took some in the lot outside and I didnt really have use for this spot, but while one of our friends and I were talking, my model started doing some weird poses and I suddenly was like "wait, do that again"

Editing

I always do some moderate to heavy post processing in lightroom and sometimes photoshop. For this shot, just basic corrections and color grading. I pushed blues in the shadows, yellows and oranges in the mids and highlights. Then in photoshop, I duplicated the image and screen overlayed it with a little "blend if" to make the hazy parts of the image. Finally I used a Photoshop Action from Jamie Windsor to create the red flairs.

In my camera bag

I usually dont carry a bag unless Im doing a wedding or an event. Normally its just the camera, my lens of choice, and a spare battery. In my bag, I have some ND filters, a rode mic, weights for my stabilizer, a 2-bay battery charger, and a cleaning kit.

Feedback

My method is always just go with the moment. Most of the time Im trying to plan shots before they happen, but a lot of the time, Im just walking around and planning in the moment. For a shot similar to this, shooting low and adding some backlighting and a little bit of symmetry goes a long way.
