Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made during a ten days vacation at the coast of Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands, at the beach of the North Sea on a beautiful September evening.

Time

Every day, I made sure to be at the beach by the time the sun went down in the West, over the water. In September, when the evenings become shorter again, I didn't have to wait too long, since the sun was setting around 8:30 pm. But every time it was waiting to see what kind of light this particular sunset would bring.

Lighting

This evening, the light was spectacular. There was a clouded sky and quite some wind, so the situation was changing rapidly. I had walked along the shoreline to find a spot where there were quite some puddles and shallow water, so as to be able to catch the reflection in the water.

Equipment

Once I had decided on the right spot, it was a matter of putting up my tripod and waiting for the moment the sun would touch the rim of the horizon. The shot was made with my Sony Ilce a 6300 and my 16-50 mm zoom lens. I prefer to shoot by hand, but because of the wind and the low light conditions, the tripod was the safest way to go.

Inspiration

Being at the seaside for only a short time, I just didn't want to miss a single sunset... I really enjoy the suspense, the waiting and the surprises the setting of the sun brings. There is a sense of silence, of wonder, of mystery and of being part of something much bigger in those moments that you stand on the beach and see the day shift into the night. Being able to capture some of that amazing beauty of nature gives me a sense of co-creatorship.

Editing

I always do some post-processing on my images, it's just part of the creative process. But when the light is as dramatic as this time, there is not much to do. The photo was a little under lighted, except for the highlights of the sun. So I brought the highlights down, the blacks and shadows up to show more of the reflection in the water, and shifted a little with luminance slider.

In my camera bag

Next to my Sony Ilce a 6300 and my E-PZ 16-50 mm zoom lens, which is standard on my camera, I also carry a FE 100-400 mm telelens. Since I love to capture landscapes, flowers, macro as well as birds and wildlife, and basically everything else that crosses my path or captures my attention, there is usually a lot of lens-shifting going on during a few hours of photoshoot. Not ideal in windy and sandy surroundings though. So a rubber blower, brush and some lens wipes also are part of my equipment. And of course a reserve set of batteries and memory cards.

Feedback

Be there! Be there in time to choose a good viewpoint and set up your equipment. Just wait for the right moment and enjoy it! And come back the next evening if you can.
