Location
Albuquerque Zoo in Albuquerque New MexicoTime
It was, believe it not, mid-day and it was semi bright.Lighting
The sky was mostly sunny with some clouds. The Giraffe was under mottled lighting, ie; under trees.Equipment
Canon 6D camera, Tamron A010 28-300mm, Speedlite set at about half speed. However, prior to shooting I exposed without the flash for the ambient light and then used the flash as a fill. ISO was set to 1600, shot at 1/1250, f6.3 and focal length at max, 300mm.Inspiration
I was out specifically at the zoo looking for wildlife photos. I've never been out of the US and I like to get animal shots that NOT native to the US. So that leaves me going to the zoo, LOL. There were 3 of them in their environment but this one broke off from the others and I was in a position for a great angle. I thought a close up of the animal would be better than a full body shot.Editing
I did do SOME post processing, photoshop to sharpen, lighten shadows and create more clarity. In my camera bag

I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS check my exposure when shooting outdoors with my live view histogram in RGB mode. This guarantees that I get proper exposure almost every time without having to use my light meter. The histogram is a fast and efficient method of getting proper exposure. Remember this acronym, I Always Shoot, I=ISO, A=Aperture, S=Shutter speed Make sure you follow this and you should get good exposures.
