📠Tregargus Valley 💀
An old water wheel from Tregargus Valley's China Clay production days. Cornwall is steeped in Tin, Copper and China Clay mining history. It's crazy to think that Cornwall was one of the richest mining places in the world...
An excert from Wikipedia reads - "The areas of Cornwall around Gwennap and St Day and on the coast around Porthtowan were among the richest mining areas in the world." (OK, the areas named don't include St Stephen, but you get the idea)...
While the indepentant writes - "Cornwall was at the bottom of the table of wealth in a recent EU survey, level with former eastern bloc countries such as Slovakia and Slovenia. Taking 100 as the benchmark for wealth, Cornwall scored 77.4 – far below most of the EU."
China Stone was quarried and milled in Tregargus Valley from around 1870 until 1965. The valley originally had seven China Stone mills - ruins of five-six remain today.
