Behind The Lens

Location

I spotted this location previously on a walk through of the city of Westerville, Ohio which has a throwback village downtown look and feel of yesteryear. I couldn't wait to photograph this high school senior in this tiny alley between two brick buildings on the downtown strip.

Time

This high school senior's city photo session was held in the softer evening light of the Fall season (October here in Ohio). Exact time was round 4:30PM.

Lighting

I wanted softer light for this high school senior's city photo session so it was an evening Fall season photo shoot. In addition, I used an Einstein 640 light with a portable battery pack on a stand with a 24" beauty dish from Paul C. Buff, Inc. to light the subject in the shaded alley way to really maker the subject pop.

Equipment

This image was captured using a Sony a7Riii mirrorless camera with a Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8 lens which is one of my favorite portrait lenses. Paul Buff's Einstein 640 light in a 24" beauty dish which worked better in the tight space of this narrow alley way.

Inspiration

In previously scouting this location (downtown street scene) I wanted to find a number of shooting spots that were different and unique. This tight alley way provided a very unique spot. It was a narrow pedestrian space of 4-5' at the front of the buildings facing the street that narrowed down to 2-3' at the back of the buildings which helped create the leading lines in the shot.

Editing

My editing style is a more natural color choice and I did have to remove a tone of frizzy hair strays from the model's hair. I primarily edit in Adobe Lightroom (LR).

In my camera bag

As a portrait photographer my go to lens is a Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8 lens. In addition, I carry a nifty fifty (50mm) lens, 55mm lens, 35mm lens in my camera bag at all times. I usually also carry an off camera flash with a Kobra brand flash modifier for tight spaces and on the fly lighting.

Feedback

This space worked perfectly because it was shaded. The softer evening light help to keep with the look I was after in lighting my model with lighting to make her pop. I also want to add that on this photo session and in particular this image spot capture that I did have an assistant hold the lighting at somewhat of an angle to fit in this tight alley way space.
