Behind The Lens

Location

I was on a vacation trip with my husband and took this photo in Hillsboro, Oregon. I'm an amateur photographer and learning new skills everyday. I'm currently in school working on my AA in Digital Photography.

Time

The time of day was about mid-day. We were walking in a park during the middle of the day. Some of the photos I took that day were shaded and I was able to take some pictures that were shaded just right with sun spots.

Lighting

I do manual set up in my camera since learning about it in a class at the college. I have learned to move the marker to the center to align the lighting right. I've also learned to pay close attention to where the sun is or isn't to get the right light to hit the petals right, but I can also adjust some of the lighting in Photo Shop.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D3000 and the original lens 55-80mm. I did not use a flash or a tripod.

Inspiration

I love roses and taking pictures of them at different stages of their blooming phases.

Editing

I edited this photo a little in Photo Shop. I brightened the colors to make them pop more and darkened the outside to bring the rose forward.

In my camera bag

I usually have my main base and the main lens (55-80mm), extra batteries, mini tripod, a cleaning kit, car charging kit, and some extra memory cards. Just starting out I only had the basics.

Feedback

Pay attention to your lighting. Whether you're in the shade or in sunlight, you can adjust you lighting on your camera if you're in manual mode by moving the line one way or the other, but you have to learn that about your camera. Just starting out the point and shoot mode does most of the work for you. My recommendation is to take a photography class to learn about your camera more and how to use manual mode.
