Behind The Lens

Location

On 25 April 1986, an avalanche hit Mogno in Switzerland, destroying the small 17th-century church. Shortly afterwards, the famous Swiss architect Mario Botta was commissioned to rebuild the church dedicated to St John the Baptist. In 1990, the modern church was inaugurated, thus consecrating one of Botta's major works

Time

11AM after a few hours of roadtrip in the Maggia valley in switzerland

Lighting

The church has no windows. The interior is lit only by the light filtering through the glass roof

Equipment

Sony A7R3 with a Tamron lens 17-28mm @21mm/F11/ISO100 No flash, no tripod. However, I put the lens on my elbow instead of holding it with my left hand to gain stability. To tell the truth, I have never seen anyone shoot in this position but I think it is the best way to stabilize yourself. I am very proud of the sharpness in these conditions.

Inspiration

Perhaps God himself. Who knows? On a more serious note, I would say that it was the profusion of raw all seeming to lead to Jesus that immediately inspired me to take this particular viewpoint inside.

Editing

I just increased the exposure

In my camera bag

A thermos of coffee is essential for me! Lens always in my bag: Tamron 17-28 Tamron 28-75 Sony Macro 90mm Sony 200-600 Filters ND for long exposure and cleaning tools.

Feedback

The weather is constantly changing and so is the light. People come and go. Knowing how to wait for the right moment is the basis of a good photo. Take your time and soak up the place. Find the right angle and wait for the right moment. For this photo, less than an hour was enough to give me a moment without people in the picture. That's why I always take a thermos of coffee and a cigar with me ;-)
