Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home right off the side of my back porch.

Time

It was a rainy day, my husband was moving things around on the porch and this "little" guy came crawling out. Startled us a bit, but it was such a cool find because we don't normally see Hercules beetles around here. The largest and most colorful beetle I've ever held. This photo was taken in the Summer of June 6th 2021 at 7:45PM

Lighting

I always shoot on the darker side, using natural light. I find in editing that I can bring more of the subject to life that way.

Equipment

A Canon EOS 80D was used here along with a 50mm lens. One hand holding the camera and the other held out.

Inspiration

I was just getting started in photography so I would typically take pictures of anything I could. The colors on this girl and the rarity of finding or ever seeing a Hercules Beetle inspired me to take this picture.

Editing

I always use Lightroom to edit my images. Exposure, contrast, clarity, and vibrancy are usually upped. Highlights, texture, are usually bumped down a bit. I then work on the colors and sharpening/softening to my desire.

In my camera bag

My camera, 50mm 1.8 lens, 17-55mm 2.8 lens, reflector, extra battery and charger, SD cards, and anything that I can use to incorporate into my images to give it a more artist feel.

Feedback

Have fun with it! A Macro lens is ideal when capturing small objects like bugs, but all I had was my nifty 50 and made it work with this image.
