Tucusito with a sad look
When a child is sad, crying for any injustice in his world, wanting to dance, play, and it cannot be explained ... it is the case of that child, in the middle of the popular and religious festival "La Parranda de San Pedro", It is celebrated every June 29 in the cities of Guatire and Guarenas in Miranda State, Venezuela. It has its origin in the Colonial Era. It consists of some revelers, dressed in frock coats and pumpá, one of them bears the image of the saint, another carries a yellow and red flag and accompanied by Cuatro and Maracas, they are accompanied by two pre-pubescent children, dressed in a red and yellow suit (similar to the harlequins), which are known as "tucusitos", are memories of childhood, and of so many shots along the way of time.

Behind The Lens

Location

On the main street, near a snack bar, when he shared with some photographers the invitation to document with the camera the popular and religious festivals "La Parranda de San Pedro", June 29 in the cities of Guatire and Guarenas in the state of Miranda, Venezuela.

Time

The region where the songs and dances of the "Parranda from Saint Peter" take place is very hot, sometimes passing 30 ° in the shade, there are moments of pause, between the dances, and it is here when I manage to capture the shot of the sad child , because they wouldn't let him continue dancing, until the heat passed a bit, it would be between 12:30 and 1:30 pm.

Lighting

It is a photograph taken with natural light, taken in situ.

Equipment

A small team with excellent optics, canon camera, something very discreet and quick to use.

Inspiration

Being in the middle of the "Parranda from Saint Peter", where several records are made with the camera, between dances, songs and walks, together with the families, the people and other photographers, I was waiting, observing and enjoying the whole festival, until… turn …. and click! I took the photograph (discreetly…) the child's eyes, his innocence and his expression… his sadness captivated me. "The Tucusito, did not understand the father, when taking him out, my child was to hydrate, rest, and then continue with the Parranda."

Editing

Sometimes, when the initial shot needs to get closer to what was lived, and if the shot allows reframing and contrasting to the necessary point, maintaining the technique and expression to be captured, preserving ethics.

In my camera bag

A Canon EOS camera, one or two lenses, filters, adapters, batteries, cloths, Rollei 35s camera, some Ilford black and white film, and another small Canon camera for more discreet shots. I try to be as practical, comfortable and light as possible according to the photographic record to be made.

Feedback

"There are thousands of stories behind those photographs and their moments, be vigilant, maintain ethics and put your heart to see ... beyond the lens is paramount, the important thing is to preserve humility."
