This burrowing owl is a new father. He and his lady have a burrow practically on the shoulder in an agricultural area near Tucson, AZ. While the mother goes out hunting for yummy bugs to eat, this vigilant father watches for hawks and other predators. Neither seem bothered by the tractors and curious photographers that frequent the road. When a hawk does come near the owls talk to each other. I'm sure they understand each other, but to me they just sound like squeaky toys.
