Behind The Lens

Location

This eagles nest is in a cemetery in Orlando, Florida! The pair have had 2 eaglets, each time, for the past 3 years that I've been going to photograph them. It is a long process, most days...waiting for them to fly in or out...unless you just want a lot of pictures of them sitting in a tree!

Time

This one was around 8 am, if I recall correctly. When they have eggs or eaglets in the nest, at least one of them tends to stay around longer. I have been back several times this year, only seen them a few times...11 to noon mostly. No eggs in the nest yet!

Lighting

The way the nest is situated, I can usually get good photos in the early morning hours, the sun is at my back then. During the day...it just depends on where they are...I change locations a lot! To get photos of them flying in from hunting food, I just have to be in the right place at the right time...or spend hours on end and hope the light is good when they come in. I have spent many hours and have many good and bad photos to show for my time!

Equipment

The camera I use most is a Canon EOS 60D with a 300 lens that I hold...tripods don't let me take pictures over my head! If they are just sitting still, I sometimes use my PowerShot SX 30 IS and use the built in zoom...it weighs a lot less!

Inspiration

The eagle is such an amazing bird, it symbolizes American greatness and freedom, it's talked about in the Bible and songs are written about them. Not everyone can get close enough, like I've been able to do. I wanted to be able to share the photos with my family and friends. I put my photos on Face Book to share with even more folks. I know that God has blessed me with a growing talent and the ever better equipment to take and share photos of His creations. Editing

This one, and most are cropped, I get close, but not that close! Some, need to have the lighting adjusted, I use Adobe. I want people to be able to see the eagle, so I get rid of all the excess.

In my camera bag

I have 2 bags, one for each camera. In both bags, I carry extra SD cards, batteries, lens cleaning equipment, and a few personal items. With my larger camera, I also carry a shorter lens and a folding tripod...that I've yet to use!

Feedback

See if you can find the nest or a place where they hang out in between flights. I have followed them and found several different trees where they like to sit, sometimes take their food to eat it after they drop some off at the nest for the rest of the family! In Orlando, it's hard to find where they are 'fishing'...we have at least a dozen lakes within a very short distance of the nest. I did go by one small lake and happened to catch the female on the ground getting water...only pictures I've ever gotten like that in the past 3 years!
