Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home in Queensland, Australia. In my backyard just after it had been freshly raining on my new grey painted fence.

Time

This has to be one of my favourite photos it is so explicitly simple, which is what makes it so raw. The photo was taken mid afternoon about 3pm I remember look outside my sliding door at my newly painted grey fence thinking the rain drop really pop on the grey. So I ran into my study grabbed my camera and ran back out to fence the grass was wet under my feet, my dogs were running around thinking I am crazy. I just knew I had to get this mid afternoon snap!

Lighting

I wanted the raindrops to be pronounced so you could clearly see each drop and where it landed on the fence. I was after a dramatic look with the lighter center of the picture.

Equipment

This was shot with an Olympus E-620 with a 14-45mm lens, no other equipment was used to capture this shot.

Inspiration

I love taking photos of storms and the sky and clouds. I love the way it moves and shifts and every split second is a different shot to the one before. I literally finished painting my fence a couple of days before I took this photo and I was taking photos for my family "look at my amazing grey fence, I just painted" I was so proud of myself because it took me so long. Then a couple of days after finishing painting it, it rained and I remember looking outside to admire my work. Thinking oh wow something is so beautiful about the way the rain drops have just stayed in place on the fence it was like it was calling out to me "get your camera Skye"!

Editing

I usually do not like to edit my photos too much as I like to capture raw uncanny photographs. So I kept it simple and just enhanced the natural beauty of this photo by slightly putting the vignette into a minus ever so slightly to create that dramatic feel to the picture.

In my camera bag

Firstly I have my Olympus E-620 and my Sony A6000 having the mirrorless along the the scope of the Olympus both produce amazing shots for different purposes. I always keep spare batteries, for my Olympus I have a compact flash and for the Sony I have an extra SD card for just in cases sake. I will always bring my tripod for those days where I have a shot that requires super still frames. I always take my Olympus lenses 17.5-45mm and my 14-45mm. I never leave home without my OPTEKA HD/MC Mirror Lens F8.0 72 No. 671246 it is an amazing piece for those beautiful landscapes. I always take my glass lensball as you never know when a shot just calls for it. This is what my backpack essentials look like.

Feedback

A photo like this is never to simple. I have had people say to me but that's it, it is just a fence. I said look at it, feel it, let it move you the simplicity is what makes this picture so divine. My advice would be if you look at something and thing its simple it probably isn't you just need to adjust your focus. Photos with only one or two variables really allow the viewer to spend ages looking at all the elements but look at it and zone in to its natural beauty.
