Behind The Lens

Location

At the Susannah Brook Nature Reserve in Gidgeganup Western Australia. This area is known for its variety of bird life and springtime certainly sees the birds in their breeding plumage.

Time

Mid morning in October which is springtime in Western Australia. A good time of day to find birds, they are active at this time, looking for food, catching up with their birdie friends or defending their territory.

Lighting

Just lucky to get this guy out in the open and in the light. These birds flit around so quickly and generally pop in and out of grasses and low scrub bushes.

Equipment

Canon Powershot SX70 HS, 1/640 sec

Inspiration

The Splendid Fairywrens are just delightful to watch and of course when the males are in full breeding plumage, such a desirable subject. The shades of blue are quite spectacular and they are such a neat little bird. This bird in particular had just caught a dragonfly for breakfast. In a previous shot he has the whole insect in his beak. In this shot you just see what is left of the red insect.

Editing

No what you see is what I photographed, no touch ups. Just cropped some of the background to make him stand out more.

In my camera bag

Aside from the Canon Powershot SX70, just a lens cleaner and of course, my binoculars.

Feedback

Persevere and watch their behaviour. Bird photography is not for the faint-hearted. It takes a lot of shots to get one of these and luck / timing is everything.
