Thank you for joining my HORSES Challenge. I wanted to commend you on this lovely shot. This was one of my top choices as well. Great focus on the horse. I liked the simplicity of just the horse yet the moving sand and blurred beach in the back adds feeling to the shot. Such a great pose. Nice job!! 😊

Location
The photo was taken on Assateague Island in Maryland.Time
This was taken late afternoon after I had spent the day on the island looking for the wild horses. That day I was struggling to see many wild horses and I was about to leave when I saw this horse with its owner on the beach, so I asked if I could take a few impromptu imagesLighting
The light was getting softer as it was later in the day, and the setting with the ocean and the sand provided a beautiful subtle natural backdropEquipment
Canon 5dMark IV with Canon 100-400mm L lens. HandheldInspiration
I was looking for horses to shoot on the island - albeit wild horses - and this was just a really fortuitous encounterEditing
I edited the owner out of the shot as I wanted the image to be totally focusing on the horse. In addition I tidied up the background taking out any distractions. Editing was done in PS and LRIn my camera bag
I always have my Canon 5dMark IV and my Canon 70-200 F2.8L lens and I then rotate my other lenses depending on where and what I am shooting. Canon 100-400mm L lens, Canon 100mm macro lens, Canon 24-105mm lens and my Canon 50mm lens. In addition to this I always carry 2 batteries, 2 SD cards, lens wipes and cleaning cloths. A bottle of water and a cereal bar gets added to the side pocket as I can easily get caught up and forget to eat.Feedback
For me, it is to be prepared to be flexible. I had traveled to Assateague Island specifically to photograph the wild horses and although I got a lot of shots of them over the two days my favourite images are actually of this horse that I hadn’t expected to meet. When I saw them I asked the owner and the family if they would be happy to let me take some photos and spent some time talking to them before taking the photos. The ability to talk to people and approach them if you see a photo opportunity is very important. Most times if you are friendly people are willing to accommodate
