Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the SKukuza area in the Kruger National Park , South Africa. We spent a week in the park, and just as we left, we saw hundreds of elephants just doing their thing and strolling along. It was such an amazing sighting.

Time

This was taken at around 4 pm , just as we were leaving the park.

Lighting

I wanted this image to have a magical feel and to really make the viewer see the magic of the kruger ,and its wildlife. I had no say whatsoever of the lighting, or any control, i just had to taker this image as the baby elephant looked directly into my soul. it was really overcast that day, with te sun peeking in a little bit which completely helped this scene.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D750, and my wonderful Sigma 135 mm lens. So , not your typical wildlife kit.

Inspiration

Two elephants passed us, so extremely close that you could almost feel like reaching out and touching them. Having a warning from a troop 5 minutes earlier, we backed away a little so as to not get in their way. The last thing you want is for these magnificent animals to feel trapped by you and to start flapping their ears. As wonderful as they are. Just as we were about to drive off, I saw the two babies following. I gasped, and as if it heard me, it turned its body toward me in kept looking at me, so curious, the baby was the perfect portrait poser.

Editing

I put the image through Lightroom, and decided to work a little by lifting the shadows and adding some contrast. I really wanted to put focus on the animal , and softened the background in PS , I always enhance the light , and finish off with dodge and burn. It turned out very magical as I had planned

In my camera bag

I am a wedding and portrait photographer with an obsession for prime glass. I use a Nikon D750 , and have a 35, 50, 85,135 prime always with me.

Feedback

For wildlife, just be present, and be patient. Wait for the animal to do what it does, and try to read that.
