Behind The Lens

Location

In my garden, almost all of my photographs are taken at home.

Time

I think it was between 9 and 10 am, as I would have started work at 12 noon. The morning has always been one of my favourite times of the day. The air is fresh and there will still be traces of dew about. I can add extra water spray with a small atomiser in my kit.

Lighting

Back lighting a favourite of mine, especially with flowers, as it highlights the edges of the subject making them pop out of the background. Also light coming through the petals or leaves will give purity of colour.

Equipment

I think it was an old Nikon D90 with a very old micro-nikkor 105 mm f4 lens, a mono-pod and small reflector.

Inspiration

It was one of those mornings when everything was just perfect, the weather, the light and the garden was begging me to come outside.

Editing

Yes, the first version was in colour, prepared through Photoshop giving the petals a soft focus glow. When I converted it to black and white, I used the Nik filter collection to give it a pale blue tone.

In my camera bag

If I am out and about, as little as possible. Say on holiday, a Nikon D7200 with a simple kit lens (18-105mm),and a mono-pod. Out in the woods I would add my micro-nikkor , a pair of Godox flash guns (blue tooth to work off camera) and not forgetting a small folding fisherman’s stool.

Feedback

Don’t be afraid to get down as low as you can, on your knees, on your tummy, any angle that gives you a good result.
