Behind The Lens

Location

Shot at ZSL London Zoo in December 2020. We were visiting to say goodbye to the female Asiatic lions, who were due to move to another zoo as part of the European Breeding Programme for these endangered species.

Time

It was nearly midday but there was a beautiful 'golden hour' quality to the light.

Lighting

Because of the quality of light, I wanted to make the most of the colours and shades of Bhanu's mane.

Equipment

Shot with a Nikon Z6 and Nikkor FX 70-300mm.

Inspiration

Big cats are my favourite and these species of lion only exist in a small landscape (no bigger than Greater London) in the Gir Forest in India. It's not often that the lions are staring so intently in your direction. I wanted to capture his intense expression.

Editing

I cropped in to draw attention to his face and eyes. Played around with hues, shadows and highlights to accentuate the lighting.

In my camera bag

Nikkor Z 50mm 1.8 prime and telephoto - either my Nikkor FX 70-300mm or Nikkor Z 70-200mm 2.8.

Feedback

Be patient - big cats are usually sleeping! Be prepared to revisit at different points during the day to get the right light.
