Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my bedroom during Lockdown 2020.

Time

This is one of many shots I took during a full day having converted my bedroom to a makeshift studio for the day. Clearing up at the end of the day before getting into bed.

Lighting

The lighting is very simple. The background is one of many that I created in Photoshop. It is displayed on an iPad held upright behind the copper wire. This gave the refracted pattern in the drops. The wire itself didn't have any detail so I took several more exposures with a handheld flashgun and chose the best option then blended the exposures in Photoshop.

Equipment

This was shot on my Canon 5D Mark II with the Canon 180mm f3.5 Macro lens. The kit was mounted on my Manfrotto tripod

Inspiration

The image was inspired by shots I had seen of Sweet Pea or Passion Flower tendrils. I didn't have any of those available so popped into my garage in search of some copper wire.

Editing

I post-process every image as I believe that the file the camera gives me is purely a starting point. No matter how good that file is. Contrast and sharpening are always applied and in this case, I blended multiple exposures to give me some light on the wire

In my camera bag

I have a main bag that contains my Canon 5D II, Canon 24-70 f2.8, Canon 70-200 f2.8, Canon 2X Teleconverter & Sigman 12-24. If I feel that Macro is an option then I have a second bag that carries the Canon 180mm f3.5 Macro alongside the Canon 50mm f1.8 with extension tubes and reversing ring. Sometimes I will carry a flashgun too.

Feedback

Use an iPad. I have an extremely old model that I keep exclusively for photography. This thing has had liquid poured on it to get refraction patterns. I have shot down onto it through a glass of liquid. I have created miniature landscapes for Lego characters to walk over. The creative possibilities are endless. Have fun.
