Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the overpass of the A1 western bypass just as you come into Ghatshead. I remember seeing all of the cars just steadily coming down and it got me thinking about how many people use this road everyday.

Time

I can't actually remember the time of this photo I remember it was seriously cold and my dad who drove me there wanted to go back in the car but I needed the perfect shot.

Lighting

I found that the natural street lights was enough to light up this scene and allowed me to use a lower iso.

Equipment

This was shot on my canon 1200D with a 17-55 f4 lens. I shot on this basic tripod that I got for £30

Inspiration

I wanted to start shooting at night through the Newcastle streets but to start my night shots I became obsessed with these beautiful warm and cold long exposure shots from these massive cities. I knew I wouldn't be able to replicate such a massive effect however I tried my best. I remember we picked the spot out when we came down the A1 and realised there was a layby to try and get some long exposures without having the light shine directly in the camera.

Editing

I just used a standard wash and balance the exposure. The wash helped bring out the lights more as the reduced contrast helps you look at them more and for longer.

In my camera bag

I upgraded to m50 and always carry my efm adapter with an ef 75-300mm my stock 15-45 for versatility but I don't use it as much after I got my 22mm f2.

Feedback

Do not forget to keep warm. Capturing a shot like this is not comfortable if you aren't prepared and wearing gloves and wholly socks is great way to increase the likelihood you stay at a place for that perfect moment.
