Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a trip to Kenai, Alaska, September 2020. The Kenai River known for its world class salmon fishing and we were fishing for silver salmon on this trip. This was the view from the shore of the Ciechanski Day Use Area. This was my first trip to Alaska and won't be my last. The scenery is unmatched in beauty and as I progress with my photography skills, I can't wait to return for more photo opportunities.

Time

We arrived at the Ciechanski Day Use Area around 9 am and set up to fish. My 14 yr old son Lloyd and his father Pat jumped right into fishing while I took my time rigging up my pole and taking in the beautiful scenery. Pat had something on his line first and it appeared to be a worthy catch... until he got it to shore. It turns out Pat had reeled in an already filleted out headless salmon! While we were laughing hysterically about it, my son Lloyd was busy reeling in soreback after soreback after soreback.... (already spawned out salmon covered in big fungus sores waiting to die). He had just landed one yet again and I took this picture instead of another picture of a soreback! It was right around noon because we broke for lunch right after I took it.

Lighting

I took this picture facing directly into the sun just to see how it would turn out. I was quite pleased with the results.

Equipment

I used the camera on my Samsung A10E phone. It's nothing but a little cell phone camera.

Inspiration

I was just in awe of the beauty that surrounds you every where you look in Alaska. Nothing is ugly. Even the bigger cities like Anchorage don't seem to have the dirt and grime and pollution that we see here in the lower 48. I looked into the water in Cook's Inlet and you can actually see the rocks 5 ft out through clear, clean water.

Editing

I did nothing to this picture except hit the photo button.

In my camera bag

I currently have only my camera on my Samsung Galaxy A51. I used to have a Nikon F3 and wish I still did.
