Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Nahant, MA USA an early morning in February 2021.

Time

The photo was taken around 6am in February 2021.

Lighting

I scouted this place twice before taking this shot. One of the challenges to overcome was finding a parking spot near the beach. All spots are for residents only. Going very early in the morning (around 5am) helped me get a spot and not having to worry about being towed :-) I initially went for a different beach, but then fell in love with this one and decided to spend an hour enjoying the sunrise and catch the photo :-)

Equipment

This shot has been taken with a Nikon D810 mounted on a Really Good Stuff L-Bracket and a Geekoto Tripod.

Inspiration

The water has always been one of my favorite subjects and combined with the snow made it for a perfect shot. This shot was planned for days and after taking it felt great!

Editing

I used lightroom to post-process the image. Mostly graduated filter for the sky and the beach.

In my camera bag

Nikon D810, 10 and 15 stop LEE ND filters. Remote shutter release, lens cleaner, tripod, NIKKOR 16-35mm F4 and NIKKOR 28-70mm 2.8D

Feedback

Scout, plan your shot days if not months in advance. Use weather apps to help pick the best day to go shooting. Understand your camera and lens to get the best out of it. Spend your initial photography journey learning the technical stuff (few months, no more than a year) and then spend the rest of your photography career understanding the artistic part which will take a lifetime to master. Be very passionate about photography and try not to fall into loving the gear instead of loving the end result, your unique photo and unique way of seeing the world.
