Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken on an early morning drive through Kruger National park in South Africa.

Time

At 06h30 we left our camp and travelled the gravel roads on the way to another camp deeper in the reserve. As I came round a slight bend at around 07h01, I looked to the right and there perched on a dead branch was this magnificent Lilac Breasted Roller. We shorten the name to LBR as we use it quite often when searching for these birds.

Lighting

The Sun had just risen and was slightly behind my vehicle and shining onto the LBR it captured a brilliant view with the light. I managed to grab my camera and take this wonderful view.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D300 with a Sigma 150mmx 600mm Zoom attached. The settings were 1/250sec f9 ISO 200. Nothing else was used.

Inspiration

Just the clarity and unbelievable colours of this bird sitting in the Sun was Perfect.

Editing

I did no editing on this photo except adding the Watermark.

In my camera bag

When I travel on my journey's through the bush. I make sure I have the following with me: All my Camera's are Nikon. 1. D300 with a Sigma AF 170-600 zoom attached. 2. D7000 with a Nikon AF 70-300 zoom attached 3. D3100 with a Nikon AF 18-70 DX lens attached 4. Sony HDR-CX150E Camcorder. With there I have a Camera Tec. Window Bean Bag to rest the Camera's on. And a Go-pro window mount for the Sony

Feedback

To me the best way to capture wild game is travel as slow as you can. Listen to every sound and react to any little moves you see. As the saying goes Slow and Steady wins the race. Any slight movement you see just stop dead still. Look and listen and some amazing photo's come into view and can be captured.
