Behind The Lens

Location

The shot was taken behind my house, in Nouvelle Aquitaine, France. I am lucky to have a field just behind my garden and so this is where I took my photo.

Time

It was last February, I had just taken the children to school. It was 8am and it was very, very cold. The sun was rising and suddenly the sky turned pink. Behind my house, the field had large puddles of water that had frozen in the night. I rushed to take my camera and my figures. I couldn't get the right angle of view so I had to lie down on the frozen wet ground. The funny little thing is that while I was taking the shot, a cat jumped on my back. I got the fright of my life.

Lighting

The sky turned pink, I took the opportunity to use this incredible natural light. Finally, to avoid that my figures are backlit, I add a little light apoint.

Equipment

The Canon 7D with an 15-85mm and a little auxiliary light.

Inspiration

I have an unconditional love for my Qulbutok figure (it's a Pokemon). And I try to portray it in funny shots. Seeing the large icy puddle, I immediately thought he might glide over it in a funny way.

Editing

The natural light was perfect, so I didn't touch up on that. The only post-processing I have done concerns the Qulbutok figure which is sliding. In reality, it is hung with a small wire and I erased the wire to give the illusion that it is in the air. Finally, I added some ice that flies to give the impression of movement.

In my camera bag

I love to photograph figures, I am what is called a "Toy Photographer". So in my bag, I always have my Canon 7D with 15-85mm. A small auxiliary lamp. And of course, two or three toys.

Feedback

To capture miniatures in an outdoor environment, you have to get down to the height of the miniatures. We see the world in different ways and sometimes, an uninteresting place for a photo takes on a whole new dimension. And to take the shot, don't hesitate to lie down on the ground, even if you have to get dirty or wet. And when people are looking at you weird, you just have to give them a cute smile and everyone is happy.
