Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo up at Lake Clara in Wenatchee, about 4 miles up a trail. It is above Wenatchee’s ski hill, Mission Ridge.

Time

The time of day I took this was at 1:00 pm on a Sunday. The sun was shining but snow was still falling, both out of the sky and off the trees.

Lighting

Although pictures that are taken during the brightest part of the day can be overexposed, the lighting was perfect here. The huge pine trees provided the perfect amount of shadow to help balance the brightness.

Equipment

For this photo, I used my iPhone 11. While I prefer my Canon, I wanted to practice using my phone in case I need to capture a moment quickly.

Inspiration

What inspired me to take this photo is the amount of erosion that you can see. The lake was about six feet down inside the walls of the snow. Although it seems like the lake is just on the surface of the ground, you actually cannot tel how deep it really goes.

Editing

No reprocessing!

In my camera bag

For photographing with my phone, I usually pack my glass ball. For photographing with my camera, I have a backpack with an assortment of lenses, filter lenses, cleaning tools, and my tripod.

Feedback

Bring some type of camera always: phone, DSLR, 35mm. Anything. You don’t want a moment where you wish you had a camera but didn’t. Don’t be afraid to try new strategies or to get dirty, in this case wet with snow. And last but not least, trust yourself and your camera!
