Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Sand Wash Basin in Colorado—which is an HMA (Horse Management Area) run by the BLM.

Time

We finally found a large group of wild horses grazing on the side of the mountain, right about noon. We took a two-track as far as we could, then left our Jeep & hiked the rest of the way. It’s important to keep your distance from the horses, so I sat down and just watched them.

Lighting

Since it was taken shortly after noon, on a mountainside, there wasn’t a lot I could do about the lighting. Luckily, the mare’s light color was a nice contrast to the greenish color of the surrounding sage brush, so that helped.

Equipment

You never know how far you will have to hike to reach the horses, so I travel as light as possible, carrying only my camera—no tripod. This image was shot with a Sony a9, 100-400mm lens.

Inspiration

This beautiful mare had a new foal, plus her yearling from last year. The foal was very shy, and I wanted a photo that would show both the shyness and curiosity of the little one.

Editing

I use Lightroom, but don’t spend much time on each photo. I straighten it, if needed, crop it, and play with the highlight and shadow sliders.

In my camera bag

I’ve recently switched over to the Sony a9, and the only long lens I have so far is the 100-400mm. And water—always carry water!

Feedback

Be patient, keep your distance, respect your subject.
