Behind The Lens

Location

On Middle Road. Located between Burford and The Barringtons, on the Oxfordshire/Gloucestershire border (UK).

Time

Around 3pm.

Lighting

Daylight was adequate for this shot.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7200 with an old 8/500mm Soviet film lens I had inherited from my Dad. I’m not exactly flash with my kit and this is about as advanced as it gets.

Inspiration

I love action shots in nature, they’re a massive challenge but also I love to capture the quirky spirit of whatever creature or animal I’m photographing. These two robins were having quite the fun afternoon and the moment was just right. I had my dial setting on continuous and shutter at about 1/2500 for an optimal freeze frame shot.

Editing

Hardly any. Just a slight lighting adjustment but that’s about it. I wanted it to look as authentic as possible.

In my camera bag

Always carry my 8/500mm soviet lens, a Sigma 100/300mm telephoto, a Tamron 75-300mm telephoto, 50mm Prime, Tamron wide angle. They’re the main ones.

Feedback

Be patient, breathe in and tuck your elbows in. And always keep an eye out and watch bird behaviour whenever possible. That way you become more tuned to how their characters play out.
