Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken on a train from Hsipaw to Mandalay. This train crosses the Goktiek viaduct bridge and makes stops in every medium-sized town. Myanmar (Burma) is a beautiful and very photogenic country, i feel lucky i visited and captured so many great moments.

Time

This was taken on March 27th, 2019 at 13pm. I remember I woke up early this day in order to get this train, which took approximately 6 hours to get me from one city to the other. It's magical how the concept of time gets another meaning when one is traveling.

Lighting

In this picture, I wanted to use the natural daylight from the window as a means to spotlight the subject. Furthermore, having the right camera angle helped me in creating shadows around subject's feet, which created an antithesis in this black and white picture.

Equipment

This picture was shot on a Nikon D3200 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

Traveling itself can take our inspiration to a whole other level. That's what happened to me during my time in Myanmar. I was in constant thirst of absorbing every detail around me that looked so magical at the time. In this specific picture, I was drawn by the simplicity of comfort and how the light was pinpointing the passenger.

Editing

Usually, I am trying not no process my work a lot. I like it when the outcome is as natural and raw as it can be since I like to portray reality. This specific picture turned from a coloured image to a black and white one. The reason behind this alteration was to remove the"noise" and create a more subtle outcome.

In my camera bag

I always have with me my Pentax Spotmatic - 35mm & Pentax AF AF-200S Flash (my first and most loved film camera) along with the Nikon L35 AD - which is great for street photography since it's very easy to focus and get the right shot. The main digital camera I use is a Nikon D3200 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens & lens Sun Shade/Shield to get the most of the lens quality. It sounds like a lot of equipment but each camera gives a different aesthetic to a photo. Thus, depending on the inspiration and the outcome I want to have, I like to use different cameras to get the result I want.

Feedback

Take into consideration how light availability can affect your outcome. Take multiple shots, test different angles, and see what works the best for you. Also, work on your focus and make sure your photo is clear where you want it to be. When capturing with film cameras it's not sustainable to take too many shots of the same angle so, what I found very helpful, was to take a test shot with my phone to see how it looks and then move forward with my film camera. Apart from the technicalities, the most important is to take your imagination further, search around you for details that make you look twice, and just enjoy it!
