Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at Oxford Island, Northern Ireland. This is probably one of my favourite places to find wildlife. Not only is it extremely peaceful but you find all types of animals in their habitats.

Time

This was shot around 8 in the morning. I remember walking around to photograph the boats in the marina and spotting the Herron in amongst the leaves. I had to be extremely quiet as they can be easily scared, the lens helped with this as it allowed some space between the subject and me.

Lighting

This shot has all-natural lighting. I like to utilize the conditions that are already there to create a great photograph.

Equipment

This was shot using a Nikon d7100 with Sigma 180-600mm lens. This was one of the first times I had used this lens. No tripod was used as I enjoy the freedom to move around the environment I am in. A flash for me, wasn't necessary as I wanted the photograph to have a lot of soft light. I believe that you don't need the most expensive lens or camera to capture a good photograph, it's all about how you apply yourself as a photographer.

Inspiration

This photograph was created by accident, I had never intended to end up with this type of subject in my photograph. This is one of my photographs that I didn't think about, I just captured it. So, I suppose there isn't a lot of inspiration or intent behind it and I think that's ok. Many great photographs, come accidentally.

Editing

I don't usually edit a lot of my photographs in general, I try to keep them as close to the original as possible. This was the case for this image as well, the only thing that really changed was the contrast and saturation of colours. By increasing the contrast in the image, it pushes the subject to the focus and forefront, whilst emphasizing the shallow depth of field that is already there.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a variety of different lenses depending on what I am going to photograph but it is usually my telephoto lens and my wide-angle (sigma 10-20mm). Although recently I have gone back to basics and bought myself a 50mm prime lens, I think this should be everyone's first lens, I learned that the hard way. I also have my 'first aid kit' as I call it, that I bought off amazon that has all the right tools in case dust or water gets in the camera.

Feedback

I would honestly say, don't think about it, just do it. The best photographs I have taken were captured based on instinct or as Henri Cartier Bresson coined it, "The decisive moment". Also, push yourself out of your comfort zone and experiment to see what works best, there is so much freedom with photography so you might as well take advantage of that.
