Behind The Lens

Location

I walked out of the side door of our house, into the backyard and noticed how bright the Barberry shrub was and just had to have the picture. This shrub perfectly borders a beautiful flower bed with a Hawthorn tree, end of year giant pink snapdragons and a golden yellow Ornamental grass.

Time

Dinner was cooking on the stove and the evening sunset was starting to barely kissing all of the Fall plants. I walked out the side door of the house on one of the first brisk fall days. I just knew I had to capture the vibrance of these Barberry shrubs in all of the glory!

Lighting

The lighting in this area is dappled when the sun starts to set. The Barberry shrubs are planted in a western flower bed but shielded by the Ornamental grasses. This makes for the perfect lighting to capture the color of this wonderful shrub.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS 70D, with an 18-135mm f/13 lens. The picture was taken no other equipment.

Inspiration

I had put myself on a 30 days - 30 photographs challenge in order to get me thinking out of the box. I had worked a full, long and stressful day at another job and I needed to 1. Relax and 2. Take my challenge picture. Photography is my happy place that I love doing, so while I was cooking dinner I looked out the big picture windows and noticed the fresh Fall colors and that the sun was about to set. Dinner was in a good place for me to grab my camera quickly and head outside! This picture with a variety of others were the perfect set of Fall colors.

Editing

I started out as more of a purist when it came to photography. In the beginning I refused to edit any photographs, but lately I've been getting more and more into the editing process in thinking of it more as an art form. This particular photograph was taken back in more of my purist phase and has a little bit of color correcting along with a couple touchups for shadows and highlights. Otherwise what you see is how the actual plant looked that evening!

In my camera bag

I either have my D series camera (I recently switched to the 90D) or my very first camera (for good luck and backup) the T2i. The typical lens I use when taking any of my pictures is the 18-135mm. I feel like this lens gives the versatility I need in capturing any shot from animals to flowers. In a rush, I'll just grab my camera with this lens and a an extra battery and head out the door. If I have extra time on my hands, I'll take my whole setup that contains about 6 different lens, flashes, GoPro, and gimbal.

Feedback

My advice for trying to capture something simple is just to take the picture. I honestly did not do anything special for this photograph other then running out of the house when I noticed the lighting was just right. If you are a beginner, practice makes perfect! I take photographs of this garden almost every week and no two pictures turn out the same -- Even year to year! Try different vantage points, this particular photograph, I was trying to get out of my comfort zone and try different view points. If you're stuck in a rut and need some inspiration -- Try a 30 day challenge -- trust me, it's not as easy as you think!
