Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while walking around Brisbane, Queensland Australia. I do a lot of street photography and am always looking for moments and gestures.

Time

This photo was taken on 23/5/19 at around 1 pm. Don't be afraid to photograph any time of day, you'll learn how to use any light to your advantage.

Lighting

It was taken around 1 pm so the light was probably quite harsh but I have a feeling that it may have been slightly overcast.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Fuji X100F, the settings I used were f4 1/160 @ ISO400. I like this camera as it is small enough to take with me everywhere while still producing high-quality images.

Inspiration

This was a nice quiet display of affection & I liked the juxtaposition between the older couple and the younger people in front of them.

Editing

I used Adobe Camera RAW to convert this image to black & white and I would have added contrast using a curve. I like to have a lot of contrast in my B&W images, I'm not afraid to have bright whites and super dark blacks.

In my camera bag

A lot of the time I just have my X100F with me, that's all I need most of the time. If I am using a film camera I'll carry a bag with my light meter and a few extra rolls of B&W film in it, usually Ilford HP5+ or Fomapan Action 400. I make videos for YouTube from time to time and when I do that I'll have a Rode Video Micro and Joby tripod in my bag as well. The bag I use is a Lowepro Urban Reporter 250.

Feedback

Just get out there and take photos, spend the time on the street and wear out some shoes. Don't worry about what camera you have, use whatever you have and are comfortable using, you need to be able to adjust your settings without looking. Time spent fumbling with your camera is moments missed. Don't chimp, take the photo and don't look at your screen, wait until you get home at least, better still wait a few weeks or longer.
